The Shepherd's Pie: Review & Giveaway!

Thursday, 1 November 2012

As a full-time working Mum, the opportunities for me to cook at home is very few and far in between. On weekday nights when we pick BabyMoo up from my in-laws, we are very fortunate to have my mum-in-law cook dinner for the entire family.

On weekends, we are usually out the entire day - and by the time we get home, it will either be too late to start preparing dinner, or I'm just too tired out from the day's activities to even contemplate a one-pot meal. We usually have dinner out, do a take-away, or order in.

I was therefore extremely pleased to get to know about The Shepherd's Pie, as it meant another option for us to have a quick meal delivered to our doorstep. Furthermore, the hubs loves pies... and it is also suitable for BabyMoo.

Initially I have to admit that I was pretty sceptical about the quality of a store bought pie, having tried some which were bought over the counter. The mass produced pies tend to be pretty dry, lacking in flavour, and in some cases, totally marred by the use of monosodium glutamate (MSG) to mask the inferior quality of the main ingredients used.

The Shepherd's Pie

I requested the 'Classic Beef' pie to be delivered to my in-laws house at 8.15pm, as that is the normal time when the hubs and I reach there after work on a weekday evening. We were caught in a jam on that day, and only arrived at about 8.30pm. The pie was delivered promptly at a quarter after 8, and that was already a plus point in my books.

I was informed that the pies are baked only as soon as an order is placed, and to provide an allowance of about an hour till it is delivered (30 minutes to bake, and 30 minutes or more to deliver, depending on location). When I opened the box, the pie was still warm.

The 9" x 9" pies serve four to six portions, and while I was busy taking pictures of the intact pie, BabyMoo excitedly kept pointing to it: "Pie! Pie! Pie!"

The shepherd's pie is also known as a cottage pie in some countries, and has its origins from Northern Scotland. It is traditionally made with lamb or mutton, and cottage pie preferably with beef (but I think with the scraps of pretty much any farm animal that might have been roaming about outside the cottage walls, hence its name). Regardless of the origins or ingredients, personally I have come to associate a shepherd's pie as comfort food, perfect for cold, rainy weather and a hearty one dish meal.

My mum-in-law peered at the cross section, and did a visual listing of the ingredients. Ground beef, carrots, corn, onions and mozzarella cheese (which was evident when she sliced the pie, resulting in excited shrieks of Chis! Chis! from BabyMoo)

The family then settled down for a taste of the pie, and it was absolutely delicious!

The potato topping was creamy, but not too much to give it too rich a taste. It was further enhanced by the layer of mozzarella cheese, which eliminates the use of salt in the mash itself.

The savoury filling was just right, and complemented the mashed potatoes perfectly. I noticed the addition of herbs in both the potatoes and filling, and appreciated the fact that the people at The Shepherd's Pie tried to make their fare as authentic as possible.

Most importantly, to me, it tasted home-made.

One thing which I felt could be better was the texture of the filling. I like to be able to taste the chunks of ground meat in the filling, and this was a little fine for my liking. BabyMoo and his cousin, however, absolutely loved it - and they actually sat down at the dining table with us, digging into their bowls of pie with gusto!

Furthermore, my Peranakan mum-in-law approved. If it passes the notoriously stringent Nonya taste test, that's a pretty big deal.

Here is the little big Boss, after a satisfying meal from The Shepherd's Pie!

What I look in a good pie? Crust that's buttery and fillings that are tasty and moist. There should be a good balance of the cheese, gravy, meat and vegetables, giving it a perfect blend that melts in your mouth, hungering for more!. Lastly, I believe that that all things should be baked with passion, it's what sets a good mouthwatering pie apart from another. :)

  10. Oh... a review well done. I'm salivating now, and suddenly feel like shepherd's pie.

So yes.. as you can see, I love shepherd's pie. I've tried making myself at home, but they don't look a single bit as appetising as the one you got to eat. So yes.. would really love a tasty, cheesy, tomato-ey, creamy shepherd's pie with a lightly browned, crispy crust.. Hmmm mmmm....

Good pie is never too salty or heavy on the stomach. You never have to think "Ugh i feel sick" after eating it. Instead it gives you a feeling of contentment. It is chunky, with just the right amount of gravy so when combined with the creamy mashed potato topping it melts in the mouth. The decadence of course is in the lovely stringy cheese.

Now, GREAT pie...is delivered warm to your doorstep!! It makes you want to tell everyone all about it! lolz

  12. Thanks for sharing this! And now I know The Shepherd's Pie has got a FB Page! Love their pies and the black pepper and classic pies will always find a spot at my gathering feast! Wouldn't mind enjoying a free pie from them this time round! :P

A great pie must have yummilicious fillings and the mashed potato topping must be baked to the point where its crispy at the top most layer and still moist in the inner layer. :9

  13. My ideal Shepherd’s pie got to have solid mash potatoes which has a little creamy taste to it and mild crust on the top layer of the pie….followed by the well marinated meat, always best with beef with a heavy taste of sauce…kaa paoo in your mouth kind….and must be generous on beef….dun like half kena type….

  17. I love pies! And your entry really made me want to order one right now.
I like my pies to taste wholesome and homemade - none of those commercial-too-much-msg laden (so yay that they used cheese) and most importantly, moist. I've tasted one too many dry pies from over the counters and that really puts me off, needless to say make an appearance at family gatherings where I've too many 'closet food critics' as family members.
