Christmas with Thomas & Friends at City Square Mall!

Tuesday, 10 December 2013

The Mookid is currently in his ChooChoo craze, and many, many weekends are spent on simply taking trains to nowhere. Of course, steam trains which actually go 'Choo Choo' instead of 'Ting Tong!' are preferred, but he's happy taking the MRT for the time being (thank goodness!)

Like a lot of kids his age, he counts Thomas & Friends as one of his favourite series, and although he isn't one to be particular about transient things (he doesn't care for tee shirts, crockery or bags emblazoned with certain characters) he loves watching Thomas on TV or DVD.

When we were kindly invited by City Square Mall for their Christmas with Thomas & Friends spectacular, I asked the kid if he would like to see a 'real' Thomas the train. It was a mistake asking him last Monday as I have had to field off "Are we going see Thomas today??" questions the entire week!

So we went to see Thomas over the weekend. I love how the boy was on his best behaviour the entire day because he knew he was going to get up close and personal with Thomas after dinner!

The atrium at City Square Mall started filling up an hour before the show was due to start, so please make sure that the kids have sufficient entertainment, snacks or drinks if you want to get a good view. We were fortunate to have front row seats, although it was pretty embarrassing to have to tell the boy to hush up amidst his incessant yells of 'Thommmmmasss!!! Where are youuuuuhoooooooo?'

The show opened with Rusty and Dusty, the station sweepers, engaging the audience with some questions and getting resounding answers from the kids. I was surprised that Caden also knew the answers! Talk about influence - I have always chosen to take supervised media exposure positively, and this has made me even more convinced. He listened, learnt, and responded. Nothing bad about that! ;)

Rusty and Dusty were amazing. They brought the house down with their singing, dancing and antics, while to me, Thomas took a back track - although the kids will beg to differ. I was pretty a disappointed that only Thomas was in attendance, without Percy, James, Emily or other trains.

Nevertheless, the kids were entertained, singing along and participating. Many were on their feet, including Caden. Nobody cared that it was hot and stuffy due to the massive crowd present, parents were enjoying the atmosphere, and the kids were simply having a fabulous time!

Then this happened.

And shrieks, yells and happy shouts ensued. I was almost trampled on by the boy in his excitement, after which he helped me 'clean' off 'snow' from my hair and shoulders with gusto. I suspect he just wanted more feel of the snow, but I'm not complaining!

The show closed with happy kids clapping their hearts out (you have to be there to experience the electrifying atmosphere) and then we went onstage to get up close and personal with Thomas, much to the boy's delight!

He couldn't stop talking about it for a long time afterward, and has been telling whoever cares to listen that he had met Thomas. I guess to an almost 3 year old, meeting a steam engine is a pretty cool experience.

Bring the kids down to experience a Christmas Wonderland at City Square Mall, starting with the Thomas & Friends show. They won't be disappointed!

  1. Oh! This is sooo delightful! What's with little boys and trains?!

Daniel is going through a trains phase too and I think he likes both Chuggington and Thomas & Friends equally. We took him on a real steam train ride last weekend and it was a hoot!
